Strange FCP Problem with Compressor.

Hey all, I recently had to reinstall my OS on my G5 because the boot sequence randomly got corrupted after downloading a service update. (Re-installed with keeping all original files)

Here is my problem now:

I had an old FCP project with HD footage using HD compression and edited as such. After the reinstall of the OS which kept all original files, it seems to have done something to my FCP only pertaining to this compressor. When I load the project from scratch, here is the message I get:

"Codec not found. You may be using a compression type without the corresponding Hardware Card."

I brush through this by pressing OK about 5 times, and the project loads. When it loads, there is no timeline. I then try to open an original timeline and I get the same message, followed by a message saying "Out of Memory". Then finally I go into the settings of the timeline to see what the problem is and I get this message:

"Video compressor HDV 1080i60 was not found. Please check that the hardware is present and enabled for this compressor. Setting the video compressor to Animation."

After this I am able to go into the settings and indeed, I see no HD compressor at all.

I really am at a loss at what has happened, perhaps I should reinstall FCP? Is it possible to do so without losing all my projects and current scratches? Anyone have any ideas? Thanks very much in advance.

Bump.

Anyone have any ideas on what I can do in this situation? Been tinkering around for last few hours and can't seem to figure it out.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Re-install FCP. As long as your project files are saved somewhere secure (external hard drive, burned to a disc, etc.) then they are sufficiently backed up and will work just fine after re-install. Your scratch disk will have to be reset but that takes but a minute (and it won't impact reconnecting of media, only capturing new media).

If you have any custom keyboard layouts or the like, you might want to also copy those over someplace safe. Then after the re-install copy them back to the folder. You should then be able to load them up using the various Load Preset options.

In general if things have gone afoul in anyway, do a full clean re-install of everything. Its long, slow, and tedious, but usually yields better results. Since you don't know exactly what went wrong where, best to just reset it all. Just make sure to protect/backup all necessary data (project files, documents, spreadsheets, music, movies, etc.) before hand.

cheers.
