Strange clicking sound in audio

Sounds OK to me, I hear one 'click' but it is the talent's mouth noise. I do not see anything resembling 'ticks' or 'clicks' on a waveform or spectral display either.
Maybe your playback device is generating the extraneous noises.

There is definitely continuous clicking in these files (both, mono and stereo) - and not just at the end but it starts as soon as the speech starts.

This is pretty strange and a phenomenon that is likely happening because of a bug somewhere in the pipeline (the clicking is continuous and begins every single time dialogue begins). You have to listen very closely. (Listening on a Mac, M1.)

More info about your setup, please?

You must have exceptional ears. I don't hear anything wrong. Is this the equivalent of pixel peeping for audio?

Honestly, it's probably old age. Truly no offense. I had better years when I was younger.

It's there, no doubt about it. There is a 10-15 frame delay once dialogue starts (but it's harder to hear because the voice overpowers it) and then a 10 frame delay after voice ends (easier to hear).

But then again it could also be the computer - OS - software - QT.

What are the chances everyone who doesn't hear it is on Windows, and only us two are using the same M1 and do hear it?

It's possible because technology is weird.

I think the clicks might be the result of the playback software/system. I've periodically had problems with QuickTime Player introducing clicks on audio playback, one of several reasons I don't use it anymore. So I did some quick listen tests, and with one app, I do hear clicks that don't appear to be on the original file.

Running on a 2019 16-inch MacBook Pro i9 CPU, Radeon 5500M GPU, 64GB RAM, files on internal SSD. Audio out via Focusrite Scarlett 2i4 to Event 20/20 BAS monitors. MacOS Monterey 12.3.1 (Still waiting for my Mac Studio to show up...and waiting...and waiting). So a decent smaller system.

Results:

Adobe Audition 22.3: No playback problem
Only clicks I hear are REALLY minor and are I think part of the original file. Mouth or background noise, (e.g., near 0:09.3 and 0:12.8).

Cockos Reaper 6.56: No playback problem
(FYI- I don't use Logic and at least for now, no longer use Pro Tools.)

QuickTime Player 10.5: No playback problem

VLC media player 3.0.17.3: Clicks during playback!
This is the current version.
I think of VLC as being fairly on top of things, but perhaps they don't have great support for the particular CPU and GPU (and OS) I'm running...
End result: It ain't working.

So Regnis, with what application are you playing the files? Do you have anything else handy to try? Like perhaps a dedicated audio app? If you don't have one, check out Reaper; it's really good and getting better...and it's inexpensive. https://www.reaper.fm A modern NLE on a recent computer should also be able to play back the files without problem.
