Storing Tripod with Head Still Attached

Is this okay to do?

I'm wondering if this might put undue stress on the tripod reducer bushing or the screw itself.

My goal is to be able pull out the tripod head and sticks all at once, all connected and ready to go.

Any tips?

Thanks,

Trey

I have ALWAYS stored my tripod heads on the sticks and have never had any problem. Current tripods and heads

1. Miller Solo DV CF with Sachtler DV-6SB
2. Bogen MDVe legs with Bogen 501 head
3. Losmandy PortaJib LWT Adjustable Tripod (no head, jib mounts on it)

Not sure where you are getting this from, I don't anyone who doesn't keep their tripod head attached to the legs all of the time.

I've never heard of anyone removing the head to store their tripod. I've never done it on any of my tripods and I've never had an issue.

Yeah, ive AC'd on big films and the DOP always keeps his rather fancy carbon fibre Miller tripod assembled. Infact the bag it comes in has special straps and supports to hold the head, so its clearly designed to be stored with the head attached...

Thank you everybody.

I'll definitely be following suit.

By the way, I have a Bogen 701 HDV head and it has a tension control for the tilt.

However, I don't see a tension control for the pan. Does this sound right?

Try tilting the head all the way down, and thres a tension knob under the shoe where the camera attaches.

My really sturdy Varizoom heavy duty sticks came with their own nice padded case. No room for the head so I do keep them seperate at the end of the day.
As others have mentioned it's more common to store them attached.

Forum,

Thanks for the insights. I just ordered a new tripod bag that should be able to fit my sticks with head attached.

It's supposed to be here this Thursday. Thanks again for your help.

When shooting with a 35mm camera package, the head always comes in a separate case.
An Oconnor 2575 easily weights 20-25 pounds so it would be very heavy to carry the head and legs together.
Also, if you are storing your head and legs together, remember to release all the tension and drag on the head before you put it in your tube or padded bag.
This is especially important if you are putting your tripod in a padded bag because if you gear is jammed up against something you want the head to move freely, if the tension is engaged there is a chance for the head to break.
Hope this is helpful.
