Storing Mics

Now that I have inadvertently purchased a 416, I got to wondering how people typically handle them (mics) on a shoot. Do you leave them setup in your blimp or break them down at the end of day and store the mic in it's case?

I remove the mic from the mount/blimp for (extended) travel and placed in it's padded case inside a larger case. If I'll be using it the next day, after a short trip to the hotel (or wherever) I'll leave it mounted. Always put the mic back in it's case for long-term storage.

I always put mics away. Keeps the dust out, can throw a couple of dessicant packs in to keep the humidity out. Compared to everything else mics don't take any time to put together or break down so there's no reason not to.

All of the above. Keep fresh silicagel stored with each mic, but be careful of the cloth packing some silicagel comes in. After some use I've seen holes appear and grains of Silicagel get loose and in danger of getting in the mic capsules.

Another good feature of the Rode NTG-3 and NTG-8 is the protective aluminium tube supplied with each mic.

That's mentioned a lot in the feedback from Rode customers.

Cheers.

I keep my primary shotgun (a 416) and my primary hyper (a 641) in a pelican case.

The shotgun is mounted in it's pistol-grip, inside the blimp (windscreen). The hyper is also in its Invision mount with its windscreen. And yes, lots of silica gel packs all around.
