stopmotion green screen - how far away the 1/6th scale figure be from green screen???

I understand that when setting a real person against green screen you want to get them a good distance away (6-8 feet) from the green screen to achieve good separation when lighting.

But how far do you have to be when you're shooting green screen with 1/6th scale miniature figures??? How many feet away from the screen should miniatures be placed?

Yes, lighting separation is still an issue, and not all that scale dependent as it's an artefact of the greenscreen rather than the size or scale of the foreground object. That said, I normally find 3-4 feet adequate (luckily, as that's all the room i have in my 'studio'). But definitely do some test shots with your particular lighting and greenscreen.
 
Thanks clang. What's your lighting setup like? For the miniature scene, I plan to set up my lighting like this:

• 2 Litepanel 1x1s to light my chromaflex green screen.
• 2 Litepanel Sola Engs to light my 1/6 scale WWII action figure (6 feet from screen)
• 1 Zylight Z90 lighting the action figure from below and behind him.

Up until now, I've never been able to pull a clean key. Probably mostly because of bad lighting setups. I didn't appreciate how important it is to avoid green spill, hence place the subject far away enough from the green. Will be posting my results later today.

Mine's pretty similar - a LED panel to give the 'flattest' possible consistent lighting on the greenscreen, plus other lights to light the foreground figures as required (without disrupting the greenscreen lighting).

If you're still having trouble getting a clean key, it's worth checking your camera's white balance - you want whatever setting results in the camera getting the greenest background possible, as that's the info your keyer uses.
 
I have shot small products on green / blue screen BGs for keys with the bg approx 1 metre behind subject.

General rule though ...distance is your friend.

What are 'Lite Panels' ? I am assuming they are LEDs!

ps. Thought we went down the green screen technique with you some time ago!

What's the best color temperature setting for shooting green screen?

I'll be shooting stop motion with a Canon 7D or 60D, for 1080p24 movies I'll be using a Canon C300. But what color temperature setting would give me the greenest background possible?

Q1: Shoot Green screen in studio . FG / BG both Tungsten 3200k.

Q2: Camera Setting Tungsten 3200K. Lights 3200K. Its that easy.
 
You will be able to get a key using these as well. I was just suggesting that in studio where you are likely to be shooting...tungsten 3200k would be my preference.

Just balance everything to 5600k and maybe add a light green gel to the BG lights.

Personally I dont like LED panel lights after a bad experience when trialing them on a shoot.

General Tip: You balance your camera and the BG lighting to say 5600K (or 3200K).
THen...you can do what you want with the subject lighting color temps and fx...as long as you stay away from your key color (hue)
