Stoned / Psychedelic / High Effect - Edit in Vegas.

I am looking to recreate a feeling of being under the influence of a mind altering drug. I considered putting this thread in "Special Effects / Stunts" but I edit in Vegas 10.

I've seen many movies and films do this with fades / extreme close ups / strange audio / motion shots.

I was curious if there was a good tutorial out there, plugins, or a set of rules, anything really to guide me into the f'd up realm... I plead the 5th on taking any mind altering substances :lipsrseal but you can definitely tell when an editor has hit the mark dead-on with his edit / cuts / effects to portray the feeling. I've searched DVXuser and google, maybe I'm using the wrong search terms but it seems like there would be a good source for this.

Thanks!

I just saw "enter the void" this weekend which had a lot of straight forward in-camera effects such as under/over exposure, going in and out of focus, lens breathing and colour abberation coupled with a mumbled internal monologue mixed with other layered visual effects. That was just what I noticed on the first watch of this visually intensive movie.

Thinking "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas", things like heavily patterned carpets and other naturally hypnotic visuals don't take much enhancement to bring alive. There are fractals to be found in nature (Pi). Shooting from unfamiliar angles, finding shadowy shapes that look like some other recognisable thing as you manipulate light and focus can feel hallucinatory.

Ask your 'friends' what their recurring imagery is during their experiences and exploit them. Most are perspective based and this is what the camera easily manipulates. Alice in wonderland type stuff like "I'm a dwarf/I'm a giant" and "big hands/little hands" should be fairly easy to do (try the Jaws dolly zoom using a vertical or angled slider at varying speeds to keep the hands the same size but have the ground rush up/away). Play with time based effects, music videos do a lot of this. Record slo mo with a long shutter speed and the actor moving slowly. Snorricam (sp?). On the darker side, digital insect swarms or childhood-style shadow monsters.

Thanks for the in-depth reply! Thats kind of what I was thinking, but put into words better than i could... definitely good thoughts to grow from. Open to anything really, I'm surprised this topic isn't covered more. Thanks.
