Since this is felony theft, and your camera has a serial number, make sure you report it to the police. Your camera is right now paying for crack cocaine (80% of all petty theft is related to drug abuse), but will most likely end up in the next few days being passed through the network of stolen goods in your community.

I went through a similar situation, my stuff showed up in a pawn shop within a day. Hopefully your local law enforcement is networked well with those sorts a shops, that simplifies the obvious at least (your right, people that are hurting for a fix do extremely predictable things generally in the same circles. It's ironic that their paranoia of branching out of their circles <specific pawn shops, etc> for fear of getting caught is the very thing that gets them caught). Good luck with it.
