Stock Footage Pricing?

I was contacted by someone who is shooting a commercial and he wanted me to license some of my footage for use in a 30 second spot.

The footage in question is probably about one minute long.

Any idea what I should charge him for this? I've never sold any footage before.

Thanks

D.

I have bought a lot of footage from Getty Images for productions I've done in the past. You may want to call them and pretend you're interested in buying some of their footage. They'll supply you with copyright and footage information. Getty is the best at what they do, so you'd be heading in the right direction. Before you do this though, ask the guy who wants to buy your footage, what he'll be using it for and how long. That determines greatly what you should charge for it. Typically I have bought footage from them (and i've seen yours and it can hold up to anything I have purchased off Getty) for roughly 500 to 1000 dollars Canadian per clip. But licensing money gets added on to that depending on where and how I want to use it. Hope this helps out. If you have any problems with getty, please email me and I'll contact my contact! Good luck.:)

disjecta - Congratulations! I went to getty/artbeats.com, a professional stock archive resource, and they have broadcast quality clips priced at about $199. Not sure if that helps. Good luck!

Business models dictate that brokers must mark-up the price of their product to stay in business. The stock footage brokers are particularly bad for this. Think 80/20 with the 20 as your cut, paid quarterly.

As for this deal, I'd figure what it would cost to go out and get those shots. They already have and that's why they're approaching you, right? Price your product accordingly while keeping in mind it needs to be cheaper than if they'd hire you to shoot it.

Considering it is video (although, the BEST video I've ever seen of its' kind from a little cam), like it or not, it isn't worth a whole lot, unfortunately. If it definitely important to know the licensing terms first and the intended use for the commercial. If it's a local ad, a starting point in my mind would be around five hundred for all of it. This arrangement would depend greatly if I thought this person or ad agency would hire me again as a shooter. If not, then I'd ask for the world.

Hope this helps, d.

This may help a bit with what we are talking about.

Thisiswells I think is pretty much on the money when he's saying $500 bucks. Remember though, if this is going to be used somewhere for the next 5 years and not just a one time one broadcast deal, you can and may want to look at charging more than this..perhaps around $1500-2000 dollars.

Just so you guys know, My friend is starting a photo (and video later) database online this year and what is going to make it different than a place like artbeats or getty is that the artist themselves will set the prices and the licensing issues and I believe she is setting her cut at 10 to 15 percent. Hopefully this will be attractive to people not interested in dealing with the larger image banks. I will post this address when she is ready to start. Hopefully it'll be another place for people here to showcase some of their work. Talk to you guys later!
