Still Image Size

I'm looking for still image size recommendations. What are the best image size settings for jpegs that I'll want to do moves on? 6x4 inches @72 dpi look pretty awful after rendering and burning to DVD... even on the images that play static with no moves. If I try and import high res images, Premiere 6.5 crashes/freezes.

Thanks!

Hi,

It is really rather simple. Think of the 'Source Window' as a camera. It has to have the same resolution as the Project, but the catch is that what you create in the VGA space is going to have a different pixel aspect ratio than the video. The pixel aspect ratio (PAR) in VGA is 1:1.

For example, if you take a 6x4 inch photograph and scan it at 400 dpi, it will be 2400 by 1600 pixels. That's loads of room to pan and scan. Premiere 6.5 can only handle so many pixels on the timeline, I don't quite recall how many, 4000x4000, I think.

You want to make sure that in the Source Window, no less than 640x480 pixels of the image are visible for the best image. Although your project settings are for 720x480, you can use either 640x480 or 720x540 (try it and see). The quality will be good enough in both.

HD has a different PARs depending upon the CODEC used.

Lastly, don't use JPEG. Save as either TIF or BMP. The larger files are your friends.

Hey Mike,

Thanks a lot! Any idea if I can safely convert jpegs to TIF or BMP in Photoshop without loosing res? Any idea if Photoshop has a "batch conversion" setting to do multiple files at once?

Thanks again!!!

Hi,

No problem.

If the original was a jpeg, then the Save as works as a conversion. There really shouldn't be a quality hit, at least any more than you 'have to have' to get it to save the first time.

'Actions' is Photoshop lingo for Macros that do batch file work. You can record a batch routine easily enough (the help files will show you how) that is pretty straight forward to do what you want. You can apply it to a folder and save that folder to another destination (another folder). Actions are under the Actions palette and you can access the batch function under File>Automate.

This will get your jpegs to BMPs from one folder to a folder of BMPs.

BTW, you can auto contrast, level, curve, resize, all that stuff, too. Furthermore, you can put stops in the Action to interact with it to insert values, too, then let it continue.

Hope this helps.
