Still Image Quality?

I'm creating a video in Adobe Premiere Pro 1.5, and I'm using a lot of still pictures. They are jpgs, 2400x1600, shot on a 6.3 megapixel Pentax. The images look great, but when I import them into premiere, and scale them down (must be 28% to appear full on the screen), the quality gets significantly worse.

Does anyone know why this is? At first I thought it was a compression issue, but I believe it's a result of scaling the image down. It would make sense if it was scaling it up (anywhere past 100%), but to scale it down shouldn't affect quality.

I would appreciate any help if people have experienced this.

Thanks in advance,
Taylor

Scale your images down (a lot) before you import them into Premiere. They only need to be the same size as the resolution of the Project and a maximum of twice that size if you intend to pan and scan them with motion.

Use Photoshop or something like it to resize them. A batch converter will be helpful.

Chances are the big files will crash or freeze Premiere.

Thanks for the help man... I ended up using a Photoshop action and batch resizing them, and the quality increased a lot.

I appreciate the help

If the images looked bad in PPro after resizing maybe you were looking at unrendered stills? Basically both PS and PPro just decrease the image size (and of course resolution) by the same amount, so there shoould be no much difference. PS might have better algorithms, or not.

And really, the DV resolution is awfully bad (720*480 pix, under 0.4 Mpix !!!) compared to digtal still photos, and there is nothing we can do about it. Fortunatelly the stills will be the sharpest frames on the video anyway, as most DV is slightly uprezzed from the sensor...
