still grab squish?

Well another one for you folks, winner gets a prize (still working on what)

I had a client that needed some stills from a DVD of theirs. I had to go through a converter box to get it into FCP (looking into a better way when I have time). Once I got it in and pulled the images as a still image they came out just a bit squished. In all formats, any ideas.

Thanks.

There is a fundamental difference in the pixel aspect ratio between televisions and computers. It sounds like you were grabbing the analog video output from a DVD source and capturing it into your NLE. The difference is that a computer uses a square pixel, while a TV has a rectangular pixel. Just bring the capture into a program like Photoshop and then use an unconstrained resize. Assuming that you captured it at 720 x 480, resize it to 720 x 540 for a 4:3 image or to 853 x 480 for an anamorphic image. If you capture is not 720 x 480, then just use multiple the captured size by a factor that equals either 1.33 to 1 for a 4:3 source of 1.78 to 1 for an anamorphic image.
