Still Durations?

I just made the leap to FCP X from 7 a few days ago so I really haven't wrapped my head around the program, this might be an obvious fix but haven't figured it out yet...
Anyways, I am making several photo montages using thousands of photos. I need each photo to be 4 seconds long but they are currently being defaulted to 10 seconds in the browser... I've made sure that the still duration is set to 4 seconds in preferences but every time I import they are still set to 10 seconds. Not sure what I'm doing wrong, seems pretty straight forward but then again I'm really not comfortable with the program yet.

I noticed that if you click on one clip in the browser, it selects the assigned length from the prefs. But multiple selections in the browser defaults to 10 seconds when brought to the timeline.

Update: Drag your stills into the timeline. They will most likely be 10 seconds long. Select them in the timeline and hit control-D. This brings up the duration option. just enter 4.0. Bingo!

This is actually the same exact behavior as in legacy FCP. You'd have noticed back then that the "default duration" were simply In/Out points set for that length of time, but the overall length of the whole clip in the Viewer was 2 minutes. This is to give you "handles", that extra footage you need to do ripple/roll/slip edits and apply transitions. And as bgundu says, when you click on it in the Browser, it's the default you set in the prefs.
