Stereoscopic 3D Monitors

Hey everyone, first time posting, love the forum.

I'm looking to start doing some various 3D tests and editing, and I'm wondering what kind of passive or active displays are available for viewing with FCP and the Stereo3D Toolbox. I'm not particularly keen on continuing to use anaglyph. (I looked for a while but couldn't find a thread relating to this... let me know if I missed it...)

I've seen people discussing Hyundai and Zalman 3d monitors, but according to their respective documentations (of minimum system requirements), they require PCs and Windows (same with the NVidea GeForce glasses). I'm running a Mac Pro 10.6.2 with an ATI Radeon HD 4870 graphics card, and I'm wondering what options I have for either active or passive polarized playback, ideally on the cheaper side... Much of the information out there, such as on the RealD site seems outdated (I don't know if Crystal Eyes is a possibility or what other sorts of CRT options might exist). Will the new 3D tv's or other "3d ready" tvs with 120+Hz refresh rates work, and with what kind of glasses that I could use with my system?

Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Hi Steve,

I seem to have the same questions as Nick h. Could you expand about your set up with the alienware monitor. Is it connected to an output device like an Aja or Matrox Card? Is it connected to one of your DVI connections. What are your computer specs and how are you running the monitor out of fcp?

Thanks in advance!

Hi Ryan, the alienware monitor needs t be run from a decent graphics card. The cards are listed at nVidia. I use a Geforce 9800GTX+. Anything less than this won't work.

You will need a set of nVidia active shutter glasses. My PC is a bog standard nothing special PC, which I purchased on ebay about 2 years ago. Not top spec at all.

I am not running the monitor out of FCP. I do the editing on FCP, the make the stereo clip in Dashwood, export as a wmv through flip4mac or an mpeg through Compressor, then netwrok it over to the PC where I show it on my 3D alienware monitor. Works perfectly. Except when making the stereo clip in Dashwood I use anaglyth specs.

Hope that helps.
Cheers
Steve

Thanks Steve! I ended up going with the Zalman. Though it has a very specific vertical viewing angle to achieve the full effect, it is great and doesn't strain my eyes at all. The viewing angle makes it so that the monitor is not the best for screening for multiple people, I will definitely be searching out an active monitoring answer for that.
