The answers to your questions would fill a book! In fact, they have filled many.

Get to your local Books-a-Million and buy a copy of Dov S-S Simens' book "From Reel To Deal" -- or any one of a number of other, similar books. Read it from cover to cover, and you'll just be getting started.

One question that can be answered succinctly -- no, companies like Universal, WB, etc. aren't going to loan you the money to make a movie. Not any time soon, anyway.

Good luck!

dream, pitch, seal the deal, production, post

This is what studios are for.

no. They finance the movie and pay you as a contractor.

know there are many fields in the movie industry. I think you were talking about major motion pictures. In the indie scene, most are self financed as way to get noticed by studios.

so studios like universal finance your movie, as in you make the movie, we'll sell it, you get your share, we get ours, kind of thing? if it's like this, why are people self financing?

No. It's their movie. They contract it all out.

Indy films are what are often self-financed. They do this (usually) to catch the attention of big studios.

Read “Shooting To Kill” by Christine Vachon as well. A great book, especially for someone starting out and wanting to know more about the independent film world.

"What They Don't Teach You in Film School" and "Rebel without a Crew" are awesome books too.
