Setup: DVX100 / 16:9 Anamorphic Lense

Captured Video: NTSC DV 1.21 Widescreen 30p

I'm compressing with Sorenson Quicktime, and need help getting correct 2.35 aspect ratio for internet distribution. I know some cropping will be involved, but I just can't figure out how to get an exact 2.35 size between actually sizeing it and rendering out the video. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Well I hope this helps:

Strangely enough you can get to at least the RATIO of 2:35 images by unsqueezing 16X9 anamorphically footage out to 16X9 and then applying yet ANOTHER 16X9 unsqueeze to the footage.

Again this will only get you a 2.35 ratio image but your image will be stretched out horizontally too much.

The basic concept that 2.35 = 16X9 X 16X9 is used when they make commercially produced 24p DVD's that were shot anamorphically on film. The footage is encoded at 16X9 ratio which only unsqueezed the image half way. The rest of the unsqueeze is done by the DVD player. This process is often called "Enhanced for 16X9 televisions". Look on the back of your favorite anamorphic movie.

In your case its most likely going to be handled differently. Do a 16X9 unsqueeze and then lay down thicker letterbox bars which will unfortunately crop into your footage but at least you will have a 2.25 image. Good luck.

2.35:1 movies that are transferred to DVD are transferred anamorphically, but with black letterbox bars. "Enhanced for widescreen TV's" means that the video was encoded at 16:9 anamorphic. To get to 2.35:1, they put black bars on it as well.
