OK...... how long do you have and how much can you afford? A step by step list for everything would be pretty long (possibly hundreds of thousands of steps ;) ) and you'd get pretty bored.

Seriously, sign up with one (or more) of these:

Lynda.com (Premiere Pro, After Effects and FCPX)

LarryJordan.biz (Premiere Pro, Audition, FCPX etc)

RippleTraining.com (FCPX, Motion, Davinci Resolve)

Now, if you don't want to 'pay' for training then there are lots of videos on YouTube for free. Remember though, if it's 'free' you're likely to need to put in more work of your own sorting the good from the bad and what applies to current versions and what doesn't.

No one is going to give you a step by step to everything on a plate for free because it's a lot of work to prepare that kind of material.

We're happy to help with specific questions, but really, this is not a "teaching" platform for absolute beginners.

1. Locate a local film school or trade school.
2. Apply.
3. Attend.
4. Study.
5. Graduate.

Once those 5 steps are done, then you're ready to learn how any specific software works.

Same here I missed steps 3 thru 5, I wanted to study further after school and was told, I was not ready to do the film degree and needed to a apply 1 to 2 yrs later , then I would be read, that was 27yrs ago. I am no Stephen Speilerg , but I do love my work more and more everyday seening world thru my lens and those lectures who told me I was not good enough are still in the deadend job teaching.

Sorry to change the subject and bit, Exact maybe little known fact that next to Bollywood the Nigerian flim industry is huge, They produce larger volumes of soap style films and very popular thru out africa. The method they use is, every thing is shot in order on one tape, there are no retakes, very little editing and if editing is done generally cuts and some basic titles, there is a lack of proper lighting technic, sound is onboard camera mics and most case sound is very poor and very over modulated and destorted , many of the movie titles are copies of main stream box offices from the west , The finished product is horrendous , but yet they sell tons of videos and dvds and whats more they produce 2 to 3 films a month on shoe string budgets, reuseing there tapes over and over. I have had seen how they work and have done many dupications of tapes to tape and DVD, Many of the wedding and funeral dvd's and tapes which have been recordered on LP, run up to 6 hrs and the DVD's are probly the worste type I have ever handled.

Editing is more than using fancy plugins and knowing how to use the tools. It's about storytelling. What I would recommend you do is see if you could find a place near you locally and invest in some hands on training. Or I would invest in some online training to help you get the fundamentals. There is no step by step guide to editing because it's an art form that changes quite a bit.

And THAT is the major advantage of my way. Learning software is easy. Learning the craft should come first, and school may not be the only place to learn it, but it is a good place to learn it.
