Has anyone seen or used the Steadicam flyer? Wanted to get some information from a user on this.
Pookie....Have you had a chance to fly this unit yet?
Thanks.

Re: Steadicam Flyer??

Yes John, I've played with the Flyer (I get to play with all the new toys).

Well, the Flyer is probably the best bang for buck real Steadicam right now, unless you're intending to use the big Arri's etc, in which case you'll want an Elite or Ultra. It operates just like a heavy rig, but is designed for smaller sized cameras.

The Flyer is my favorite "light" rig, got one coming sometime next week in fact, i couldn't resist, a great, easy rig to fly, and "reasonably" easy to learn on.

Hope this helps.

Re: Steadicam Flyer??

Yes. Tried it on my Steadicam introduction course and it's perfect for lightweight cameras. Because everything is lighter, it's much easier on the back and leg muscles than the big rigs, but actually more difficult to get smooth and controlled shots because there's much less inertia - that's just the physics of all stabilisers. However, that makes it a great rig to learn fine control of a Steadicam. If you can practice and control one of these well, then the bigger rigs with more inertia will seem easy.

....."easier". ;)

Re: Steadicam Flyer??

My son Bigstein is looking into getting one. I use to let him put my old Master Series on about 8 years ago, but he could hardly hold on to it. Now he's 6'2 and 180lbs and still has the bug for it.

I stand corrected! :)

Re: Steadicam Flyer??

Whats the best price that you guys have seen for the Flyer?
Iam seeing aprox $6100.00.

Re: Steadicam Flyer??

ok.... Thanks for all the info. I'll keep ya informed on what we do. Take care.

Where are you guys seeing this price for the Flyer? The ones I am getting quoted are quite a bit higher than that. Also, which type of battery mount do I get for the ones we use with the DVX? There are four choices, and none ring a bell.

Thanks!

I have the same question about the batteries Goonie. Hopefully Pookie will see this and let us know. I have the feeling it doesn't matter. But maybe one of the choices means cheaper batteries. I am getting my price for the steadicam from Rush @evsonline.

Since the Flyer is compatible with NP-1 style, Sony V-Mount, PAG and Anton Bauer bricks, any of them are good.

Personally I prefer Anton Bauer, but that's just because I have them.

The IDX batteries are pretty nice from what I've seen. What do you think about the GPI-PRO?
Does it offer anything over the Ultra today? Or, was it mostly an older system from the nineties?

Two things...

Two things...

First off, I am feeling pretty damn stupid. I am trying to clarify about the batteries. Can I use the SAME batteries that I currently use on the back of my DVX100a? You guys are throwing out names that I don't understand the meaning of. I have 8 batteries for my DVX, and would like to use these if possible so that I don't have to carry around 2 different types.

Second, the only reason I am probably not going to go with Rush at EVS is because tax on a $6000 item is quite a chunk of change -- if I buy out of state, I can avoid this. Anyone know where to get one at the prices listed above? ($6100)

Thanks!!!

The weight limits for the Flyer are 4 - 15 lbs.

"Can I use the SAME batteries that I currently use on the back of my DVX100a", no, they won't work, Flyers are 12V or 24V.
The DVX is 6.8V - 7.8V

The GPI-PRO, a great system, one of my favorite and most used rigs.
Not outdated at all, just lesser known.

True, there is tax, but at 3% tax, it comes out to $200. If you pay cash/check/MO/wire, then you get a 3% discount. No more $200 tax! And ofcourse, no shipping, since you are picking up in the front lobby. So you are ahead $70-100.

Then there is that other cool part, that the steadicam factory is 4 blocks down the street from us on San Fernando Blvd. That means you get a factory fresh piece, not one that travelled across the country, sat in a warehouse, and then came back to you. :)
