Staying motivated and inspired

What do you guys do to stay creative?

I once read that the key to prolonged inspiration is to identify at what moment you become inspired. Is it when you listen to music, what type of music, is is when you read a book, what type of book...? Then recreate those moments. I found that I became inspired when watching really great (and original) films. So for the last few years I've been digging up the classics and I've found that it never fails me with regards to inspiration.

I disagree with the above to some extent. For me that creates over thinking and seeking out things in order to be inspired. When I do that it doesn't work. Instead, I have to generally keep myself active; socialize, see new places and new things (including films) and generally keep my energy level up and any sense of depression or other negative mindsets from taking over. Part of that is finding things to work on, even if I have no intent of ever using it for anything. Just record something. None of these things inspire me, but they set the foundation for creative work. At least for me.

Sounds about right. There's a saying that I like: "Inspiration will start it, discipline will finish it."

Not to change the subject too much, but me and the wife were in Petaluma a few months ago. Stayed at the Hotel Metro, went to Lagunitas Brewery and then to Taps. Had a blast!

The best part about being your own boss/having your own company, is that you can, to some extent, chose what projects you work on. Granted, bills need to get paid, but you still have that freedom. The worst part is NOT taking advantage of that freedom, and repeatedly putting yourself in projects that you really don't want to be working on. I think that's the biggest challenge, is knowing how you want be perceived, and what type/size of projects you want to be associated with, and then going after those. That's where I'm at.

What works for one person, doesn't necessarily work for another. In any case, you've just identified things that help keep you inspired, and then you go out and do them.
