So I picked up this film the other day because I like the cast and had heard nothing about it. Plus it was only 5 bucks.
OMFG!!!!
I just wanted to watch it over and over and over, drop acid, drink absynth, smoke opium and start watching it again.....
Well, maybe not all the drug and alcohol....
But I am going to be watching it again.
The shots are great, the locations are bizarre, the editing is awesome and the ending is............
Sorry if this film has already been discussed, I didn't find it in a search.

This seems like the only way one would be able to enjoy this movie. I felt like it was specifically made for this purpose. Cause if you want to watch a movie that makes sense, DO NOT watch this movie.

I was shocked that Mark Forrester (think that's his name -- directed "Monster's Ball") directed this becaues I thought it would have been in their advertising campaign. But it wasn't.

Ugh, I wish I could agree with you but I strongly strongly do not recommend this movie.

I agree with both of you!

It's a beautiful movie... very imaginatively shot, with outstanding editing and gorgeous visual effects. However, the ending basically reveals that you've wasted the last hour and a half of your life... the kind of cheap ploy that usually stays in film school. It's an interesting experiment but as a theatrical film I think it's pretty much a train wreck.

I think they used the After-Effects-fancy-transition too often. It's like they were afraid of a hard cut. Ryan Gosling is amazing, but coherency is certainly wanting. Judged on a indie-film-just-out-of-NYU standard, it's pretty good, but this had a legitimate budget and the guy's directed Ocsar-winning flicks, so I expected more.

By the time things started falling apart in Ewen's world I was feeling a little dizzy. But for some perverse reason I like the out of control/ nothing is making sense thing. Maybe it is a bit of a film school assignment in shot and edit, but since I've not been to film school I was able to fall into it and just experience it. The style made me think and think outside the box.

Just to be clear, it's the STORY that I think is juvenile and film-school. I can't really talk about it here without spoiling it but when it happened I sat there and thought, "Are you *&$^ing serious?"

**POTENTIAL SPOILER***

I was expecting either the Twilight Zone episode where the condemned man dies and... or Ewan would turn out to be Ryan.
The whole scene at the house with the mom and the dog really threw me though.

i think somebody wanted to show off their editing skills. story was eh' but at least it was different. i liked the suicide kid's character though.
