Statistics for alternate revenue streams

Geez, doesn't that sound exciting?

We are putting together our business proposal and we wanted to get some info on alternative sources of sales for our finished product. Frankly, we don't really know how to quantify potential income for traditional outlets like theatrical and DVD sales (so any info on that would be helpful as well) either. But we think that showing there ather potential outlets, such as pay cable, airlines, or even more emerging types of venues can help our proposal.

Any input or help would be appreciated. Thanks.

That information is not publicly known. If you join the AFMA you might find out some of it. Or you could hire someone who knows all that info to help you do a business plan, like Louise Levison of www.moviemoney.com.

Thanks Barry. I've read Louise's book, which was very helpful. But I think I may have been unclear. Having specific numbers would be great, but even just having examples to cite, such as, "In addition to traditional outlets such as theatrical distribution and DVD sales through big box stores, there is a growing trend towards rentals at neighborhood coffee shop kiosks, direct fulfillment via the web and delivery through handheld devices. This trend greatly expands the potential for income outside the existing delivery systems and frees the filmmaker from the absolute necessity of signing a major distribution deal to recoup his bedget and make a bit of a profit." Maybe with some very general statistics to back that up. I can't even find a single article like that. I know they must exist, because the trends seem obvious. I just can't seem to find them.

I don't know of specifics, but check the archives of Hollywood Reporter and Variety, the AFMA, and the VSDA, plus maybe there's something of interest in the IFP somewhere...

Will do. I also sent the question to Louise. Thanks for that link, her archives are pretty informative.

Jim,

I'm in your boat and also extremely interested in obtaining this kind of information. Let me know what you're able to find out!

Additionally, does anyone know where one can obtain information regarding numbers of units shipped/sold regarding DVD sales?

following is a link a free download of to a very comprehensive recent study published by Accenture Consulting's Media & Entertainment Group. It focuses on the future of distribution channels and future industry trends. I'm not sure if it exactly hits the mark for you, but it may jog your mind to some areas you were not yet considering and is chock full o' statistics that you may find helpful:
