static-look when captured, HVX FW400

Not sure if I'm imagining it, but it does seem that once I've captured the footage from the HVX, the results contain quite a bit more static than they do from the regular log and capture window. I suppose this must be some encoding issue.

I am using the DV 48khz preset to capture the footage.

Any ideas what could be happening here, or is this normal? If it is normal, makes me wonder if the end result will look good enough for DVD/TV... :Drogar-Thinking(DBG

What format do you have the camera set to? Are you doing NTSC or PAL? Are you recording to P2 or tape?

The Log & Capture window is a very low rez quality preveiw, and not to be trusted for anything but verifying you're getting your footage. When you say "static" I'll assume you mean "noise". This is very likely with the HVX, I do find it to be a noisy image. Lighting is super important with this camera. Barry also has some tips on reducing noise, like steping down the Detail Coring a notch. I did that on a gig in Florida last week, and was amazed at how much noise it got rid of.

The log and capture image was fine, I do not find that to be a low resolution image in fact. I was referring to the image once captured, which seems to be inventing noise, from somewhere. I assume this is some encoding issue, but I'm not sure.

Going back to what Ben said though, where are you seeing the noise exactly? If you're seeing it on your computer monitor, in any circumstance, you can only trust that so far (and not too far to boot). You need to make sure you're previewing your stuff on some form of external monitor (preferably a broadcast monitor). That's the only real way to do a quality assesment of the captured footage. Because you're dealing with proxy images, sequence settings, and the like, what you see in FCP, on the computer monitor, is not necessarily what you really have.

cheers.
