Static from New ME-2 Lavalier Mic

I Recently bought a new Sennheiser g3 wireless kit and noticed some weird static coming from the ME-2 lav mic. I tested the kit with different cables and recorders and I tried another Lav from a G2 kit to make sure it wasn't a problem with the receiver or transmitter.

I also tried the new lav with a G2 set and got the same static results. I am going to get a replacement but I was curious as to what might be causing this?

I posted two clips from the mic on sound cloud, links below.

Any help appreciated!

Hunter,

You didn't mention anything about the location or the distance. You could be picking up interference. Have you tried different frequencies, turn off flo lighting, cell phones, etc.

I tried leaving the transmitter and walking around the house, but I was never more than 20 feet away. I also tried different frequencies. I didn't try turning off the cell phone but wouldn't that still affect the signal even with another lavalier? I will test it though, thanks for the thoughts!

It could be a bad cable or connector on the microphone. Lavalier mic cables are thin by necessity and tend to be kind of fragile, and you need to be careful with them to avoid breaks and shorts that can cause noise. It's pretty rare for one to be defective right out of the box, but it does happen. (I always carry more lavs than I am expecting to need specifically because they do tend to develop cable faults from time to time.) It could also be the mic capsule itself. This sounds like a clear case to avail yourself of the manufacturer's warranty and get it replaced, although it's obviously a PITA to have to send back something new before you even got a chance to use it properly.

I am going to contact Sennheiser today for a replacement. I am glad I tested it before putting it to production use! :)

Thanks for the help guys!
