I've been a filmmaker for years, but have always relied on rental equipment for the work I've done. Recently, I purchased a Canon T2i Rebel, and love the damn thing, and am also loving the fact that I can shoot smaller, quicker productions without the need of the massive overhead of the huge crew, etc.
Basically, the camera is letting me hone my craft on more shorts and small features, rather than waiting for funding, getting everything together, then renting the hugely wonderful, fantastic grip trucks
So, my question is that I'm looking to starting building up my kit for my own personal use. This isn't to be used to rent out, this isn't to be used to work for everyone in the world or for me to do jobs for other people.
What I'm used to using is Arri lights of all various different deliciousness and Kino Flos, but the blunt truth is - I can't afford these things on my own. They're wonderful, but after doing some research on the web, especially here, for the last few days, I'm seeing a lot of great new options out there.
Flolight vs KinoFlo
LEDZ vs Traditional high-heat/high-power light sources
Obviously, I'll need something to help with wides, but the majority of shooting will be close-ups, etc. I've also read that some of the led-based lights can be powered by battery, which is a HUGE benefit for me.
My question is - what do these sort of lights offer vs the traditional Arri light sources like the 650, 1k, etc. Is Flolight a viable alternative vs KinoFlo? How does LEDZ throw compare to that of traditional lights?
