Stargate movie star ring effect?

Anyone know what they did for the wormhole shot where all the stars come in a circle and then collapse together?

I have an idea of how to do it with today's software, but I just wanted to know how they first did it.

That's a tough one... but I'm sure Trapcode FORM can replicate that. A 3D camera move was definitely used to get the moving forward look. I just can't figure out what plug-in could do that precisely. Good luck

Oh I'm pretty sure how to do it with modern tech and software, I just have an interest in knowing the old ways. I'm assuming it's 100% digital, but I wan't to know how they did it.
