This looks pretty friggin awesome, I think, and very much in the spirit of the cartoon. And along with ROBOTECH, one of the few cartoons I've been waiting my whole life to see as a film.

Are they going to set it in present-day NYC? :)

Seriously, though, it does look pretty good, and more importantly, faithful. I, too, wouldn't mind seeing a live-action version of the Macross portion of Robotech.

NICE!!!

I think StarBlazers kicked off the whole American Anime craze.

Here's to hoping they don't give Robotech the Transformers treatment. IMO Robotech it's S-O easy to remain faithful to the core of Robotech.

For example, Toby McGuire wants to play Rick so let him. Get a flavor of the month pop star to play Minmei (it'll draw her fan base), the love story will grab the female audience, and the explosions, transforming robots, fight scenes will keep the guys entertained.

Easy right?

Hmm....it does sound a bit like transformers. Arrgh.

In a generic sense, yes it sounds a little bit like Transformers. The thing with Transformers is that they took what could've been good and mangled it to death with overly frenetic cutting, bad humor, thin plot, pedestrian world building, and very very strange acting styles. Everyone in Transformers seemed way too overly excited even for the fantastical situation they were in, making it exhausting to watch and not really entertaining.

The world of Robotech/Macross is so much cooler and more interesting than that of Transformers. Its like comparing the awesomeness of the Star Wars or Star Trek universe with that of Independence Day.

Of course, fitting the whole story of Macross into one movie . . .

(Or, you know, Starblazers.)

Robotech screams trilogy.

The first film could end with Rick experiencing the horrors of war after fighting his first battle, the second could end with Roy getting shot down or perhaps when the Zentrandi Armada arriving, and the third could end with well....kind of like the tv show, a huge cliffhanger.

I think its been confirmed that Kasdan is writing the script. Now they just need a director who will respect the original material.

My vote is for Zack Snyder; I know Watchmen wasn't well received but I enjoyed the film and he remained true to Alan Moores material (for the most part) and spirit of the characters.

Is it just me, or is "Robotech" already the "Transformers" version of Macross?

I want to see a kick-ass, live-action, version of the Macross Plus OAV. You know what, I take that back--I don't see how a live-action version with American actors, or for that matter, just about any actors, could be as good as the animated version.

That said, that trailer for Space Battleship Yamato does look like it tends toward the kick-ass side, but I have no frame of reference for SBY or "Starblazers."

Danger lurking everywhere
But we've only got to dare
Evil men with evil schemes
They can't destroy all our dreams
We've must be strong and brave
Our home, we've got to save.
If we don't in just one year...
Mother Earth, will disappear!

Fighting with the Gamalons
We won't stop until we've won.
Then we'll return
And when we arrive...
The Earth will survive
With our Star Blazers!

That's from memory, so it might not be perfect.

Love the idea of a decent Star Blazers movie. Robotech would be great too but I worry about it being "Michael Bay'd" - too many explosions, not enough coherant story.

P.

I wouldn't call it that. They toned down some of the violence, but it's mostly pretty intact.

I think American (or European) actors would work, because the characters were pretty Westernized. But with, you know, funky hair.

Yeah, I'll watch this. I hope they keep some of the moral ambiguity of the original. They probably will. Any time there's stuff blowing up in a Japanese movie, there's always some degree of moral ambiguity...

As long as the "wave motion gun" is involved I'm in. I took the whole damn episode for that thing to charge up. But when it loose....good gawd.

New trailer. Bad Aerosmith song, so put on mute. But wave-motion yumminess for your enjoyment. The battle sequences look great.

It seems oddly like an early-mid 1990s low-mid-budget product in the look-and-feel. Look forward to seeing it.
