Star Wars scale models

Forced perspective I got. But what is he doing, cutting out every branch in the foreground trees when compositing?

Put the branches in after the ship so they go on the top layer. Background with trees layer, then ship layer, then foreground trees layer.

I figured that, but I guess my question is, are the foreground trees real or models themselves? I could see using a scale model of the ship with scale model trees in the foreground against a real backdrop of landscape, all photographed together. Otherwise if you're compositing the trees in the foreground, that's a lot of pen tool work in photoshop.

You mean rotoscoping? Because I don't see how a garbage matte would have worked with the woods part.
Works well for photos or static shots in videos though.

For at least a few of them, a nice clear blue sky would work great for chromakey.

Other shots could well have the foreground layers added in.
