Star Wars Fans

(from IMDB today)

The U.S. Postal Service plans to mark the 30th anniversary of the release of the original Star Wars with a commemorative set of stamps featuring characters from the movie. The set, which will bear the new 41-cent first-class rate, is set to go on sale on May 25, eleven days after the postage hike takes effect. USPS Stamp Services director David Fallor told the BBC Wednesday, "We believe these stamps have the potential of reaching the blockbuster status of the [1993] Elvis stamp." Terms of the postal service's licensing deal with Lucasfilm, which owns the rights to the Star Wars characters, were not disclosed.

I will of course be purchasing several sheets of this.

I've never comprehended the need to "market" new and different stamps, any more than I can understand the need to keep changing the appearance of the nation's currency.

I mean, what are postal customers going to do, if they don't see a bunch of new stamp artwork every so many months? Stop using stamps? I don't think so.

Maybe the post office could stabilize its rates, if it wasn't spending money on designing and printing and distributing new stamps whose practical employment is 100% identical to the older stamps they're replacing.

Unless new stamps are a profit-maker for them. Which I guess they might be.

And I *am* a Star Wars fan. When it comes to the movies made between 1977 and 1983, anyway.

There are many people who collect stamps, and if people buy stamps and never use them, USPS should be making a profit on them (unless it costs more than face value to produce a stamp, which I find very unlikely).

Yea I'm with you on them printing too much crap and jumping up their rates. Lately I have been writing messages to that effect on those little postcards they put in my box and putting back in the out box.

The stamps themselves are another matter. I am a casual collector, the last set I bought was the DC Comics set.
