Star Wars fan film contest on AtomFilms

FYI, a short film that was made by some DVXUser friends of mine is currently entered in the online AtomFilms Star Wars fan film contest.

Pat Kerby, aka "filmmaker58", was writer/director, and Jay Nemeth was director of photography, and I was one of the producers. You may remember these guys as the two directors of photography I had shoot the very first HVX200 footage way back at DV Expo; Pat was DP for the "karate" footage and Jay was DP for the kitchen table/desert footage.

The film is "Star Wars: Essence of the Force", and its weblink is here:

It was shot on 16mm on (primarily) an Arri SRII, with steadicam work on an Eclair NPR and insert/slowmo shots on a couple of Bolexes.

I'm not vote-begging; feel free to vote how you really feel, as I wouldn't want us to unfairly influence the outcome of a legitimate online contest. Just thought y'all'd like to know about it. Best of luck to Pat and the incredibly talented crew of the Las Vegas filmmaking community.

That was silly. But I've long awaited the introduction of Count Dewku.

Though when I saw the thread title, I had a burning hope that we'd see Barry with a light saber in there...

Count Dewku... ooh, I'll have to tell Pat that. Although IIRC, we made that before Episode II was even out. I think we shot that in 2000, maybe 2001, so nobody really knew about Dooku yet IINM...

i loved the lightsabers and costumes. i liked your attention to detail.

the end was pretty bad though as it didn't really fit with the rest of the film.

Great cinematograhy and effects....but the music was very early 80's action-like....think escape from new york or rambo....it just didn't fit. But they got the lightsaber look down pat.

I just found this while I was surfing YouTube randomly. One of the better fanfilms I've seen. Imagine my surprise when I saw your name in the credits Barry. On YouTube it's got the TFN Fanfilms logo at the front, but in the course of finding this thread I happened to watch your commercial reel. What's the story? I don't watch TV.

Well, the story was that a group of us in the Las Vegas filmmaking community wanted to show what we could do; it was rather annoying that big-budget productions coming from L.A. would always bring key personnel with them rather than hiring locals when we had some very talented locals. So Pat Kerby came up with the idea, I helped pull it together and underwrote some of it, and a whole lot of great folks came out for three overnight shooting days in a detention basin in North Las Vegas. Brad Hill made some amazing props, and we had some professional stuntmen playing the roles of the Jedi and the Sith; Pat choreographed a fight scene and Bart and Chuck did the special effects work; Pat set off a 40-gallon gas bomb (I think it was 40 gallons) that had choppers swarming us instantly, but hey, we had a permit and paramedics so they waved and went their merry way.

It ended up winning an award in the Atom Films contest; best live action short or something like that.
