Star wars episode 7: Coming soon?

I've been thinking about this deal. While for the most part I think it's a great thing for Star Wars, giving me hope, there are also two points that I feel are a bit negative.

1) Disney now owns ILM, Skywalker Sound, and everything associated with Star Wars. That with Marvel, and their other film companies means they're one step closer to a blockbuster dominance. It means they are slowly controlling more and more of our content. Not to say they don't make great content, but the fact that they control so much doesn't settle well in my stomach. No one should own so much. Maybe it's just the way it is, and it's been happening for a long time with many companies, but still doesn't feel right.

2) Disney is known for being VERY controlling of their content and copyright. Studied this at school, but don't want to get political so I won't get into it. However I feel like this would have a hinderance on one thing I used to love, fan films. Lucas has always been very relaxed when it came to this content, and even held fan film contests. I feel like this attitude may (and probably will) change with Disney.

Looks like they already had a writer on this. Michael Arndt (Toy Story 3, Little Miss Sunshine) wrote the treatments that Disney committed to--

This makes me more optimistic as George himself didn't write the treatments. Arndt doesn't blow me away as a choice (Little Miss Sunshine was okay, Toy Story 3 had a lot of contributors) but he's a real writer at least.

I'm not sure I feel too comfortable about the guy who wrote "Little Miss Sunshine" putting together a Star Wars script. But hey my opinion means nothing on how this comes out. I'll just have to sit back and hope for the best.

Well he's definitely a REAL writer. He knows story, he knows character, he know pacing, he knows tension, etc... The fact that he's done good feel movies may not bode well with everyone, but just because he's written Toy Story, doesn't mean he can't write star wars.

He's definitely a HUGE step up from George Lucas, and perhaps most of the hollywood writers out there.

My concern with "Episode 7" is that it is already written in the EU books which are considered canon by LucasFilm and the fans. Are we going to get a Bevel Lemelisk character building a Dark Saber? Grand Admiral Thrawn? or are we going to get a Disney script that completely disregards the existing history and screws the while timeline of the EU.

...screws the while timeline of the EU.

That timeline is non-existent for 99.999% of the world. How many people in the United States alone do you think even know there are books that purport to be sequels to the originals?

You must remember that you are referencing a tiny group of book fans. I daresay Disney can do whatever they like, in whatever direction they like, and whatever that is will be canon in the eyes of all.

Just saying...

i'll set the opening scene... jar jar binks accidentally kills chewbacca in a podracing mishap. go!

Most Disney/Pixar films have a deeper meaning than what Star Wars could ever aspire to.....

A lot of people in this thread don't think Disney are willing to go evil/dark enough.... Disney have gone darker and more twisted in almost all of their films than what Star Wars ever did.

TS3 was never intended for an audience of 5 year olds and the film demonstrates that, very clearly.

Completely agree. The problem is this tiny group of fans have a very big voice yelling at the top of their lungs. I'm a fan too, I've read some of the books, han solo trilogy, rogue squadron, and currently reading the Thrawn trilogy (the suposed episode 7, 8, and 9), but the way I see it is the canon is canon, and the movies are the movies. Sort of like how The Walking Dead series is an 'alternate universe' of the comics. Or how there are different origin stories to spider-man. When you change mediums you can give an alternate view. If you don't, then the 'artist' making the piece has to paint by numbers, rather than give his/her fresh twist on things.

Besides the new prequels (if you choose to believe they exist) have already screwed with the canon stories, like Boba Fett's origin stories, the clones, etc...

The world has just changed so radically, and we're all running to catch up. I don't want to jump to any conclusions, but look... Kasdan and Star Wars, two cinematic powerhouses separated by 30 years have just been suddenly thrown back into the mix together. How can we possibly have the slightest idea what to expect?
