Star wars episode 7: Coming soon?

I do. I think the wit and sharp characterization he displays in his writing is a quality that the prequels sorely lacked, along with everything else. His sensibility in Avengers most reminds me of classic Star Wars. Of the plausible candidates he seems the best fit to me. Some have mentioned Gore Verbinski but I'm not the biggest fan of his.

He was the right guy for Avengers, but I don't want to see a SW movie with that tone and level of camp, which is kind of his thing.

Expectations were pretty high when they took over Pixar, too, and that seems to have turned out all right.

I can't see how this can possibly be a bad thing. Lucas flushed all legitimacy and value straight down the toilet, so getting it away from him can only be a good thing. The writer for "Lost" is apparently already clamoring for a chance to write a Star Wars film. The "Iron Man" director already tweeted a picture of R2D2 wearing Iron Man armor... How can this be a bad thing? There's soooo much talent out there, and George Lucas isn't it, so ...

Anyway, can't wait to see Princess Leia added to the "Disney Princesses" lineup... not sure how that's gonna work, but ...

I don't think it's a bad thing for Star Wars that Disney has it. But if they make a movie with the heightened expectations, they may be (creatively) sorry they ever did it. :)

Looking around the web, I see so much expectation from people who can name every character in the "Expanded Universe," you know what the inevitable result will be.

Those who want Whedon forget he's already tapped for Avengers 2. They'll never choose him for SW7 with the schedule they have for it and the praise for him after Avengers 1. He's already taken...look elsewhere. Just my opinion but to me it'll never happen.

I didn't see camp in The Avengers...A healthy sense of humor, but not camp. The Schumacher Batman's was camp..Anyway, as mentioned, he won't probably be available if they want this in theaters by 2015.

Ever since the original trilogy, I had hoped there would be a complete movie about the Millenium Falcon and Han Solo. One of the best badass ships and coolest characters ever put on film. Think of their dark history, their involvement in space pirating and cross crossing through the Empire under the radar of the larger stories of good vs. evil. That would make a simply brilliant story.

Well, yeah, they'll get yelled at by the 0.5% of customers who were expecting something they didn't get, something that nobody could live up to anyway. Just like there are people who are upset that The Lord of the Rings didn't include that whole section at the end where Sarumon goes to the Shire or whatnot, or whether Faromir(sp?) was portrayed "accurately" or not.

To which I can only say: so? They just need to get over it. Because as a trilogy, as a series, LOTR was 1,000,000,000,000,000,000 times better than Star Wars: The Jar Jar Years. Whether it was "technically accurate" or not, it was certainly true in spirit to the source material.

With any luck, the priority will be on making great stories within a fantastic setting and universe, and not so much on worrying about whether some trivial character from the expanded universe is rendered accurately or whatever.

It's like -- well, here's exactly what it's like -- J.J. Abrams could have made a Star Trek film with William Shatner in it, or he could throw out most everything and reboot it and make a fun (if awful) film. And yeah, some folks hated what he "did" to Star Trek, whereas I thought -- holy cow, he took a fun, inventive, original series which had run itself into a stale, boring, technical, soulless, lifeless mess... and he made it fun again! Sure it has plot holes you could drive a truck through, and sure the villain was the worst portrayal of a Romulan ever (more like a pro wrestler than an alien), but... overall, it was good popcorn and a fun ride.

So imagine if Disney can get some skilled filmmakers who have the skills of a Peter Jackson, who love the original material but want to make real, quality, good films. Obviously not Peter Jackson, he's busy, but someone who has comparable skill and who cares about the original material as much as Jackson loved LOTR. Screw the expanded universe details, but go with what was brilliant about the original trilogy: good vs. evil, faith vs. science, relationships between characters, and spectacular action scenes, and the Force, not "midichlorians"...

And REAL MODELS. None of this CGI stuff. Let's have real sets, and miniatures, dang it!

If they do to Star Wars what Abrams did to Star Trek, far more than 0.5% of the fans will be screaming. You're talking about throwing out EVERYTHING and redesigning the whole thing from scratch, with an all new cast for the same characters, all new look, all new history.

Which I very much doubt they will do. But you'll have a lot of very vocal people disappointed no matter WHAT they do. They've got the bull by the horns.

Whoever they choose, I hope they go with the gritty, lived-in look of the original trilogy. So, more miniatures and practical effects. More of a really high budget Moon than a Prometheus in approach. Maybe Whedon leans a little too heavily on the CG?

EDIT: Gah, I see I was beaten to this point...too much futzing with word choice

Which is what some people are already asking for. A reboot.

Of course, that's not what they're talking about so far, as far as I know they're talking about continuing Luke's character 30 years from the end of Episode VI.

In any case, I predict super-die-hards will scream, no matter what they do. So? EVERY fan screamed at what they did with Episodes I, II, and III, so -- no matter what they do, they can only go up. Once you've hit bottom, there's nowhere to go but up...

That's going to be a tinier minority than any Expanded Universe screamers. Almost no one wants a reboot. It would astonish me if it's a tenth of a percent who want that.

That's the heightened expectation they'll be working against.

I'm sure they'll do a good job with it. I just hope the director and production team know what they're in for.

Is my memory faulty (Quite possibly), but when the original "Star Wars" came out GL said that it was the first of a "Middle Three" films, and that there were going to be three trilogies. So doing 7, 8, &9 makes a kind of sense He's already bollixed up 1, 2 &3.

But is there enough source material?

Comparisons with LOTR don't enteirly work, as there was already a massive 1000+ page tome to work from with even more back story (Which PJ is working into "The Hobbit").

Hmm....PJ & Weta doing "Star Wars".....

Can't please everyone, obviously. But they certainly have the chance to please SOMEONE. Unlike with EPI - EPIII, which pleased nobody.

Can't help being optimistic. I just see that a possible chance to victory, is better than a guaranteed path to defeat. And as long as George Lucas stayed in control, it was a guaranteed path to defeat. At least now there's a possibility that they'll do something good. Of course they could screw it up -- Disney is the same studio that produced "The Haunted Mansion" as the one that produced "Pirates of the Caribbean".

Hopefully they learned their lesson on "The Haunted Mansion" and, furthermore, hopefully the (hopeful) legions of extremely talented top-tier Hollywood talent who have been aching and begging for a shot like this, will come forward, and do it right.

I dunno; Ep III has a 7.7 rating on IMDb with 275,000 votes.

I guess the question is, who's the audience? Playing devil's advocate, why SHOULD there be an Episode VII?

And yet, Episode III features Darth Vader lurching around like Frankenstein and shouting "Noooooooooo". That irritated me much more than the lack of some "extended universe" character like, oh, what are those twins, Jacen or whatever?

Meh.

Why should there be an Episode VII? Because we've wanted REAL sequels since 1983. It's been a 30-year wait. It's a rich universe, with tons of possibility. Same reason there should be an Avengers II. And there most definitely should be a Serenity II. Because the potential for awesomeness is awesomely awesome. But only if it's awesome!

Since I went to the theaters for all three... uh... I mean... four Pirates movies... I'd probably go for a SW VII and hope like hell that it was not a SW I-esque script. As for my 'reaction' to SW I... III... I realized within a few scenes I was not the target audience... once I realized that... all was, if not well, at least understandable...

Of the three I, II, III, I think III is the most 'watchable' for me... the characters are 'old enough' to have 'adult problems'...
