The book is out The Force Awakens.

would you read it before seeing the movie? I'm tempted but don't want to spoil the movie so I'm not going to read it.

I know people who do read novelizations before the movies. Never really understood it myself. If there's something I know I want to see, I go in as spoiler-free as possible. It's always worth it (unless the movie just sucks).

Of course, with the Olympic God-level massive overhype of the Force Awakens, the entire universe is conspiring to cram spoilers down your throat. Can't even shop for groceries without something trying to poke into your eyeballs. (Side note: no idea how the movie is EVER going to live up to all this.)

It surely doesn't matter to ticket sales. Fan reaction is something else, though. I mean, you know how forgiving they are when things don't match up with expectation. And expectation is . . . well, I won't make the "galaxy far, far away" joke.

I don't expect the original Star Wars. You can't catch lightening in a bottle twice. The audience has changed and story telling has changed a lot since the original. But Batutta makes a great point, the Prequels greatly lowered expectations. Anything that gets back to adult story lines and a decent script and the "grit" that is Star Wars will be extremely appreciated.

I was talking with someone today saying how I felt the Prequels were meant for children, and the reply was that the prequels had some really dark moments. True, but they were so ham handed they didn't feel dark. Like Annakin kills "younglings" oh the horror, killing children! but the turn around is so abrupt it's just not believable and therefore doesn't have much impact. And, they are just kind of anonymous children, I mean you always care about any children, but we didn't know them at all so not much impact. Plus Hayden Christiansen was just terrible in that role. I won't say he's a terrible actor over all, but it just didn't work having him play Annakin Skywalker.

Another problem with the prequels was starting at the beginning, which means you have no hidden backstory to give the characters depth. Even Harry Potter doesn't start at the very beginning, since Harry has that whole backstory about his parents going to HOgwARTS which gets revealed over the course of the series.

Yeah, but at this point, the yardstick isn't the prequels, it's the promise of all the hype, including the record-shattering trailers. Expectation is through the roof. No one is thinking "meh, gotta be better than the prequels." They're thinking "ZOMGGG!!!!111!!1!!! THIS IS GOING TO BE SO AWESOME!!!1@!1!!! GAAAAA!!!!!!!"

It'll be good (maybe great), and it'll smash records, and all that. I just think NOTHING can live up the last year of hype. I don't think any movie, ever, has been hyped, or anticipated, THIS much.

Where are you seeing the book out? It's supposed to be delayed until Jan. 5th.

Oh, you are right. Sorta. The Kindle version is available the same day as the movie. The Hardback will be released later.

TONY: What is it, do you think, keeps people going back to Star Wars? Generation after generation, it seems to connect with people like no other property I can think of.
ALAN DEAN FOSTER: It reduces storytelling to enjoyable basics. Good guys vs bad guys, with a few variants to keep things interesting. Not unlike WWII tales. You sit back and enjoy. It’s cinematic/literary comfort food, like a good hamburger or grilled cheese sandwich.
