Star Trek: Into Darkness

It didn't. In fact, Star Trek was always better when Roddenberry was hands-off.

This thread is really not the place for another listing of the myriad sins of Berman, Braga, Moore, et al, so let's just say that I respectfully disagree with you on the first. :)

Oh my god, he is SOOOOOOOOOOO Gary Mitchell.

If I may paraphrase Mr. Jimerson from any discussion of the X-Men movie franchise, Gary Mitchell isn't British. :D

True, but he's way closer to being British than Khan! :cheesy:

Plus, check out Alice Eve's Elizabeth Dehner hairstyle!

Unless Kurtzman and Orci pulled a fast one and put Elizabeth Dehner in the film with Garth as the villain. Frankly, I would prefer that to Mitchell.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure Karl Urban did spill the beans on that one, regardless of the writer's attempts to obfuscate...It looks good but it seems like they are following the Wrath of Khan formula to a tee.

Speaking of aping Wrath of Khan, check out the few extra shots at the end of the Japanese trailer--

Hmm, some people have put forth the theory that he is playing Garth of Izar, and it does seem to fit. Unfortunately, this makes the story even MORE like Wrath of Khan.

Frankly, I would rather have Cumberbach as Garth instead of Mitchell. The episode with Gary Mitchell is well done, while Whom Gods Destroy is pretty weak. If I was writing the script, I'd be more fascinated with this character as opposed to Mitchell.

Too many similarities to Khan with the Garth character for me. Mitchell is different enough that it wouldn't feel like a total retread. Another thing that tips Cumberbatch towards being Mitchell, is that in the official synopsis his character is called a one man weapon of mass destruction. Gary's nearly limitless power fits that description. Garth, as written, only has shape shifting capability so I'm not sure how that makes him a WMD.

The biggest tell that this is Gary Mitchell is, to me, the following:

The Star Trek Ongoing comic series, which is retreads of TOS stories with the new universe, is supposed to be pretty much canon for the J.J. Abrams universe, and the storylines are, at least superficially, looked over by Kurtzman and Orci. The very first two issues deal with Mitchell and that episode, though it's always a possibility that he comes back (frankly, I always thought Star Trek V should have had the twist that "God" was Mitchell...would have been nice to see Gary Lockwood again and it would have resonated far better than what we got).

It's totally plausible that Mitchell is still alive and returns from being stranded on Delta Vega (kind of awkward...the comic even references that) seeking revenge. In fact, that would very much allow a Khan-like story thread without using Khan.

The counter-argument is that Mitchell doesn't need to resort to physical violence, unless it has something to do with the fact that, like in the episode, his powers grow over time. There's also the problem with getting the audience up to speed if you don't retell the whole story. If it starts with Mitchell already stranded on Delta Vega, you have the thorny problem of telling that story in a way that doesn't bog down the film.

OK, here's my idea--we all go out and start posting on every movie rumor site we can find that we have inside information that Cumberbatch is playing Q. :D

I don't really get why they'd go to such pains to destroy the original universe and then just follow it -- if indeed that's Gary Mitchell (whom Karl Urban should have played) and Elizabeth Dehner.

There's also a "fan" film (Gods and Men, with a number of actual Trek actors) which centers around Gary Mitchell being allowed to run rampant.

The trailer didn't seem at all like Star Trek to me. Actually looked like a pretty terrible sci fi film the studios crapped out that happened to have a couple shots of a very recognizable space craft in it...

It's... Transformers?

Let's see...
BOOM! Look, explosions!! Shiny glass electricity everywhere! Angst! More angst! Look at the artificially enhanced blue eyes! Sexy hot wimmins! (OK, that's cool)

I've read this entire thread. I AM a trekkie, having seen them all, TOS, TNG, DS9, all the movies, dozens of books as a kid.

The reboot is STINO- Star Trek In Name Only. Let's get real-- it's the latest roller-coaster ride leaving nothing in its wake.

Do I expect anything resembling the core material anymore? No. When Vulcan exploded I threw up my mind and surrendered to modernity.

I expect little more-- very little more-- than empty CGI glitz and angsty pseudo-hormonal acting anymore.

Time marches on...

Looks good to me. It's 15 bucks or so to see it. I don't understand anymore about the negativity.

//Okay. It's not a damn Woody Allen movie. Sheeesh.
