Stanley Cup challenged in court

It was bound to happen: Yeasterday, a Toronto lawyer filed a formal lawsuit against the Trustees of the Stanley Cup. The hearing is set for July, they are trying to push it closer to a 'hockey' season.

This will be interesting... don't know how many hockey fans are out there. Personally, I don't give a damn about NHL (bunch of primadonnas getting insanely inflated salaries), but I love hockey because that was what I played on a local pond when I was a kid. Back from school by 2pm. On the ice by 3. Off the ice after dark.

For the record - I support this lawsuit because it attempts to upheld the public trust and charitable organizations laws. If the Trustees go by that name, they have the fiduciary duty to act in accordance with the intent of the Trust - in this case, the Stanley Cup Trust (or whatever it's actual legal name may be), which was to award the cup YEARLY to a premier hockey league in Dominion of Canada. Move over, NHL! If you can't give people hockey and Stanley Cup, let someone else do it.

I agree; give the cup up to at least another club or league. The first cup winner was a Amateur Hockey Association team!

I used to really be into hockey; when Gretzky played for the Kings is when I was exposed to the sport (Give me a break; I'm from San Diego) but have gotten out of it in recent years; sans the playoffs.

And XCheck; don't blame the players for the salaries; it's the owners and the League.

I am sure they collectively contributed to this mess. But to illustrate my point:

Dominic Hasek is undoubtedly (one of) the best goalie in the world. But I don't like when people lose perspective on where they are coming from.

Had communism not fallen, he would be playing for a Czech army team now. What's up with his attitude and demands when choosing where and for how much he plays? Granted, this is unrelated to the current NHL strike, it's about two-three year old story, but I lost a lot of my respect for that guy. I am pretty sure there a many other primadonna players in NHL.

On the other hand, Jaromir Jagr is said to spend his summers keeping fit by working on his uncle's farm in Czech Republic...

In any case, as far as I am concerned, NHL may go dead. A new league could spring from its ashes...

I can see that side of the coin; it's as rampant in any pro league. I hate when players hold-out of camp; the NFL primadonnas are the worst; these rookies coming out of college have to the gall to hold-out and then are given these insane contracts as unproven players. But..............

The damn owners and league need to curb it; its out of control. Owners like Steinbrenner of the Yanks has never helped.

They need to cap the players salaries on a sliding scale:

Rookies - Make between "X and Y" only
2nd Year Players make between "X and Y" only
....
....
....
....
10 Year Veterans "Make between X and Y" only

Like the military except with a slide in the middle. E-1, E-2, O-1, O-2

I wish that would happen John,

but in reality there are rookie players that are *JUST THAT DAMN GOOD* right out of the gate. Like Lebron James and many others. The players themselves "know" they are that good, and won't command anything less than #1 drafts and million dollars salaries / endorsements. They could care less about "working their way up" the ladder / sliding scale. It would create probably even more problems if your *superstars* are making less than the *veterans*.....even though the *superstars* are the ones the fans are coming to see. I understand the *young whippersnapper* point of view....because I am ONE!! We just want the quick buck. No offense to anyone. But that's the way it is most of the time.
