Standard web page size?

I'm designing the background for a web page in photoshop. I know I should go with 72dpi res, but what's a good size? 8.5x11?

if your talking inside the page background, then 950(safe) to 980(cool) width, the height depends on he site of course.you can account for fill on the outside too if needed.

I second 800, however please do consider "liquid layouts", unless strictly needed its good design practice to avoid fixed layouts.

It used to be 800x600 but now-a-days something that fits in the 1020 standard is good at 72 dpi. I used to use small text sizes with pixel fonts but now my eyes strain with them so I wouldn't recommend them anymore. They were cool when 2advanced.com was the sh1tz.
Well after writing that I went back to 2advanced and... they still are the sh1tz.

Hey Beat- What happens when somebody tries to see that site with a cell phone? As Anhar suggested, a liquid layout that will stretch or shrink is best, but you can only squeeze so much, ya know?

thats what she said. And if its on a phone you can usually zoom in and out so it shouldnt really matter since its no set resolution on a phone.

Liquid layouts use percentages instead of fixed dimensions. If a screen is big, it will spread out to fit. Look it up and you will find plenty of tutorials.
