STANDARD AUDIO LEVELS?

What is the "Standard" audio level for dialogue within FCP and how do we meet this standard within FCP? Is there a level on the meter we need to meet or not meet? The red bars? 2 green bars? Yellow bars? Everyone has their TV volume on different levels. This baffles me because it will sound just right to me and then I give it to a friend to watch on their TV/DVD and it blasts them out of the room!

Also, is there anyway to adjust the volume of an entire 90 minute Final Cut project (1000's and 1000's of edits) in one quick adjustment? I'd hate to find out that my audio levels were way off and that I have to go back into every single cut and adjust it.

Most of the places I've worked at use -12db as "digital zero". So basically keep your meters around -12db but if they bounce over that it's fine as long as it doesn't peak. You can adjust your overall audio output level by using the audio tool. There is a "master" slider on the far right that you can use. So, if all of your audio is mixed right relative to itself, but it's all just too loud you can use the master slider to bring it down.

You want the sound close to the red, but not in it. If it pops quickly into the red on occation, your still probably safe. Remember that you want to get close to the red but not in it.

yup, -12 is a safe zone to keep your audio, so in case there happens to be a loud sound, it'll go up in or near the red, so it has room to make that loud sound without creating noise (sneezes, yells, etc).
