Standalone DVD recorder fast, Vegas slow, WHY?

So I just got a standalone DVD recorder. I can record an hour of a TV show and after finalizing the disk, pretty much HAVE THE WORKING DVD in my hand within 5 minutes. How does it do an MPEG2 render of 1 hour of video that fast when Vegas will take MUCH longer than that to render???

Anyone?

Thanks.

Exactly -- there are dedicated hardware chips in there that are compressing every frame as it comes in (similar to how your DVX compresses to DV on the fly, or how a Z1 compresses to MPEG-2 on the fly).

However, Vegas isn't really a slouch -- it compresses to MPEG-2 at realtime speeds.

Also, you could probably get significantly better quality from Vegas, because it can do two-pass compression. Two-pass is *really slow*, but can result in a better quality file.

When I render to MPEG2 I ALWAYS do two-pass ... figure, if I'm putting out the final, I want the BEST possible file, right? It's worth the extra wait, in my opinion. However, when I do, I plan on doing it when I'm done with the PC before I go to bed so it'll have all the time it needs and I'm not in a rush for it.

Norm,

Hav eyou ever done a comparison of the same footage compressed with 1-pass and 2-pass? I have, and have not seen any benefit. What is your experience?
