Stadium light temp?

Not really a lighting expert here...

I'm shooting a few shots for a commercial at a football stadium at night. We can't get in for a pre-light so I can't test out the lighting in advance. I'm bringing a small 2k genie in case there isn't enough light (shooting with 35mm adapter), but I'm wondering what i'd need in terms of bulbs and gels to match the color temp of the stadium lights. Maybe it would be cool to have mixed lighting but I doubt it. thanks in advance.

Do you have access to a color meter? This will tell you all you need to know. After you know the color temp of the lights (because they differ from stadium to stadium depending on the type/age of the lights) then you can use the mired value to determine the gel needed to correct.

If not, you should perhaps just invest in a gel package which can correct for most temperature differences. Plus green, minus green, CTO, CTB, magenta, etc.... and different flavors of each.

Without knowing what the stadium uses and the age of the bulbs... there is not much I can tell you.

could be anything

could be anything

Yah that's a hard one. I have shot stuff in hockey rinks where the lights are more towards 5k then in a baseball stadium where they were just a bit warmer. It all depends. It's best to be prepared for all occasions. Just off the top of my head I want to say that it will be closer to 56k light than it will for tungsten. That has been my experience 98 percent of the time in a big stadium setting like that.

Most, if not all stadiums use metal halide gas discharge lighting which in my experience are close to daylight in color temperature.

Contact the stadium and see if they can point you to the electrical contractor who services the stadium lighting. They'll be able to tell you how the fixtures are lamped.
