Stable Sped-Up Shot?

Hi all --

I needed to shoot a scene where the camera is rushing down a street (sped-up), stops in front of a building (regular speed for a few seconds), then rushes down the street again (sped-up).

What's the best way to shoot this? If I'd shoot it from a car, would it be too bumpy (pot holes, etc), and would it be better if I'd simply walk down the street, maybe with a steady cam?? Camcorder will be JVC HD100.

I guess the question is: How can I achieve a stable sped-up shot where the cam is moving all the time?

Thanks!

You'll need a good steadicam operator though....Just remember the steadicam itself is worthless without a good operator.

I agree with Huy but I would add, you should shoot it at 60 frames. Shooting more frames, then accelerating and decelerating the speed will give you a smoother result than shooting 24P and speeding it up.

I was thinking this as well, but I wasn't sure whether 60i would result in unnatural motion stutter at regular speed since you're basically converting 30 fps to 24 fps at those times. Might be better to shoot 24 fps to start with since speeding up footage is more simple than slowing it down in which case 60i would have been necessary.

I don't know Huy. I just shot a project where we had people getting hit by trains. We put the train right next to the talent, then backed the train up as as we had the talent react. All shot at 60fps and then reversed/speed ramped. Looks pretty smooth to me, just use AE/Twixtor or something that can do it right.

I'll post clips when the client puts the project on-line. Can't do it yet, the client is showing it to the press on Friday.
