Stabilizer or Jib

DVXers just want to get an opinion. I have an HVX200 and I was looking to buying my next toy - either a glidecam 4000 or a jib (probably will be homemade). At the current moment I am not looking to spend more than the cost of the 4000 for either.

Which is the more practical. I have no real plans for use yet, I can use both in different situations.

Most are invaluable for what they do, but between the two, I would get the stabilizer before the jib/crane.

I think you will get much more use out of the stabilizer. It's not going to do much good when you need that crane shot, though.

...and you can DIY a jib easy and cheap for under $200.

I would also go for a stabilizer, though it takes more time until you get a usefull shot from it.

if you havent used a handheld stabalizer before, beware of the fatigue of using without the vest. i have a glidecam 2000 that i used with my DVX100a and it got uncomfortable pretty quicky if handholding, so i bought the Smooth Shooter vest to ease the discomfort. you can go a long time with the vest.

the Glidecam 4000 is a little heavier and more weights are needed for the HVX200.

the Smooth Shooter vest ia around $1,400. since you have limited cash available you might want to look into this...

their stabalizer looks very similar to the Glidecam 4000. in fact they say that their vest is compatible with the Glidecam 4000. the vest doesnt look quite and nice and the Smooth Shooter but i think the combo of stabilizer & vest looks like a steal for the money.

good luck!

Ok, thanks for the help, I am interested in what the difference is between the glidecam and the stedicams other than the price.
