Stabilization in Vegas Pro 11, worse than 10...?

Is anyone else extremely frustrated about the extra steps now needed for stabilization?

1. In 10 you can just right click a clip, hit stabilize, then apply your preset. Now you have to go to media fx, add the plugin, then stabilize. Why the extra step?
2. No option to stabilize a sub-clip. In 10 that was a great feature. Stabilize one bit of footage, not touch the rest. Now in 11 you have to apply the stabilization to the entire clip, even if you are only doing the Media FX on a small piece of footage. Why no subclip option?

I am continuing to use Vegas 10 on my current projects. This seems like an incredible hassle for something so basic. Right click, stabilize, done. They managed to complicate that.

No thoughts? Am I the only person out there who is frustrated beyond belief at how they complicated my workflow in 11??

I havent worked with 11 yet, so please confirm that this is possible.

In 10, its super annoying to have to stabilize multiple clips without using a script - you cant select multiple clips, right click, and stabilize. Now that its in the form of a plugin, you can apply clip-level, track-level, and probably project-level stabilization.

Thats a win in my book, if that is indeed the case.

That is actually fairly accurate, and yes it is a positive to apply it to a given piece of media and know that it will go through the entire video. My issue is with the subclip creation. I now have to right click -> create subclip -> right click -> media fx -> sony stabilization -> apply my fx... That is a much more convoluted process than the previous right click -> stabilize -> (yes/no) subclip -> apply. You cannot apply at a project level.

One other gripe is that the options have been reduced to Pan smoothing and stabilization amount, which a checkbox for rolling shutter. In 10 we are given the option to adjust pan/tilt, pan/tilt/roll, or pan/tilt/roll/zoom. Now its just off/on...

Has anyone noticed that the stabilized track doesn't remain after saving your project?

I'm editing a standard def project with HD files, and apparently if the project's properties don't match the clip, the stabilization properties will get all messed up when you save and open again later. That means I have to delete and re-apply stabilization to all my clips that need it every time I reopen.

This has GOT to be a bug they are fixing.

I hope?

Anyone else notice this? I admit that I haven't used 10, I'm upgrading from 9- would 10 be better?

Thats an interesting problem. I work only in HD so I haven't had that problem, but stabilization has really taken a step backwards in my opinion. I am sticking with 10 even though I have purchased 11, for the time being. I hope they provide another update that fixes some issues along those lines.

Darn it- is there a script or something to render out a stabilized clip into MXF or something? I'd like to not have to do this. :/

You can always render your stabilized video event to a new track.

1) Double click your video event to give it a loop region.
2) Tools-> Render to New Track (or Cntl+M)
3) Choose the MXF template that matches your Media.
4) Make sure you've checked "Render Loop Region only"

btw: I've always had my best results with stabilization by making sure Project Properties == Source Footage Propertis == Render Properties

Yes, but the finished product is a standard DVD, and I'm adding B-roll taken with a HDSLR in 1080p. Didn't think that would have been a problem!

Yeah, there have been a lot of complaints about the implementation of Stabilization in Vegas Pro 11. Unless this gets fixed (i'm on build 521, and it's still not working properly), I think you're pretty much forced to render to a new track, then remove the event that includes the Stabilization FX. Once you've done that, you should be able to render to an alternate format.

The other alternative is Mercalli V2, which I've had good success with.

Is that video yours? If so, I would love to see the SAME frame before/after, not a left-side of the frame vs the right side stabilized. It is not an accurate comparison. Left side has no bird, right side does. If you are able to re-frame that so that we see the same frames before and after, i would love to see it...

For now the most logical choice (for me) is to simply keep using Vegas 10 until they fix this crap. Makes me furious.

No cropping was done in Sony Vegas on either of these video events. Of course, the stabilized event has been zoomed by Mercalli because that is the nature of stabilization.

I'm seriously thinking about getting v2. Footage looks great, and I hate the plugin as currently presented in Vegas 11.
