SSDs for Odyssey 7q?

Hi,

I was trying to figure this out, and based on Convergent Designs website, the 7q supports up to 1 tb of the samsung 860. However it seems the website haven't been updated in a while.

Does anyone know of what the largest capacity that the 7q can handle? And are there any other type of SSDs that might work better (faster)?

There are no other commercial SSDs that offer the 2-bit MLC NAND of the Samsung “Pro” drives. Everything else uses 3-bit or 4-bit with a 2-bit cache.

The 2-bit is essential for filming because it’s the only type of NAND module (other than 1-bit) that can sustain a continuous heavy write load.

3-bit TLC NAND with a good cache is going to fine for some lighterweight codecs. But if you’re shooting raw or uncompressed, it’s very risky to not use drives with 2-bit NAND.

And the manufacturers make it INCREDIBLY hard to even know what NAND types they’re using, because they’ll obscure the actual specifications with buzz words like “3D NAND”. Most don’t even list the specs anywhere. So stick with Samsung 860 Pro drives, they’re the only ones with the appropriate architecture for sustained high write speeds.

Thanks for the reply!

So then space....does it max out at 1 tb, or can I go 2 or 4?

I believe that 1tb is the max size ssd the Odyssey Q7 can handle.

Several websites offering the Odyssey Q7 for rent package it with 1tb drives, never anything with greater capacity that I've seen. And in their descriptions of the product they cite it only with 1tb ssd ability. This suggests that 1tb is the max possible.

1TB is the biggest. The Odyssey knows what kind of SSD is mounted and it will only work with specific drive models. Otherwise you’ll get an “unsupported media” error message.
