SSD external via USB for video editing?

Hi all.
How well do you think an SSD would work connected into a USB port for editing?

Would the SSD used externally with cable be faster than an internal 7200RPM HDD (non-raid) SATA 6Gb?

I am trying to figure an easy way to work on projects between by notebook and desktop, back and forth as needed...

USB3 is 5 gbps. SATA is 6 gbps, so slightly faster. But none of that matters, because your bandwidth bottleneck is the SSD itself: 520 MBps write and 540 MBps read. WHich is slightly slower than USB3's 640 MBps. Bandwidth for HDDs are harder to nail down, as it varies based on platter density, platter count, and of course, spindle speed. The numbers I've seen top out around 120 MBps.

TL;DR: SSDs are way faster than HDDs. The drive speed is the limiting factor, not your USB3 connection.
