Squibs.

Yes. And you should hire one of these people to come on set with you, since explosives should never be handled by someone who is not trained to do so.

I have used medical syringes with great success.

Basically, get some 60+ CC syringes and some tubing to fit on the end of it.

Draw in a bunch of blood into the tube, and hold.

Place in where gunshot is to happen and launch when ready. If its a skin shot, you can hide the tube within a latex appliance.

Word. I met a dude with a wicked scar on his chest because him and his buddies made some DIY squibs.

Compressed air is a reasonable way to get gun shot effects without doing anything too dangerous.

Don't even think of using explosives without a proper certification and training. You make a mistake here and it may be the last one. Do it with hydraulic or air or hire an expert.

squibs are no joke man! It's a way to get your self sued, or even imprisoned. If a small piece of sand or anything were to hit the actor in the eye, or if you add to much powder you can really mess somebody up. Your best bet is to use air, and it doesn't take much to get it right. I think a good air squib is better looking than an explosive one anyways. It's just that air is more of a challenge to get right.

People, at what point did I say don't have access to an expert that could be standing by while we shoot?

I don't think anyone was trying to flame you or insist your not a professional. I think we assumed since you had to ask, you didn't have the budget for a pro to come on set, which is expensive. So don't take it as people were doubting your professionalism, take it as the members were concerned for your safety:)

Sorry, that came off a little more dickish than expected. I was just trying to point out that if I really need to, I COULD have access to an expert.
