Squibs........can we make-um....hehehe

You can make safe ones pretty easily. They only work with closeups, but they look pretty good.
Fill a plastic baggie with your blood, have your actor wear some padding. Place the blood bag outside the padding and their regular clothes over that. Cut a hole in the regular clothes to act as a bullet hole. Now, at a safe distance shoot your actor with a spring loaded airsoft pistol. They have enough force to break the baggie but will do nothing else. For added effect have your actor fall backwards to really get the blood flowing out of the wound.

i just want to go on record stating that this is a horrible idea. not only because its very dangerous and youll likely end up with someone hurt, but also because in the time it took you to do you coulc much more easily work up a safe solution such as using air compression or comping in practical effect footage, and painting out the holes for pre shot. or of course just using a pro effects person with the right equipment and knowledge. ..not trying to be a party pooper. just saying that its more trouble than its worth no matter how you look at it. :)

This is a joke right?

You can make 'em, but the ATF may want to have a "little talk" with you!

There's a reference video on youtube showing how to make an explosive squib with a plastic straw, copper wire, tape and gun powder.

Keep in mind explosives are restricted for a reason! THEY CAN BE VERY VERY VERY DANGEROUS!!! I would go with digital effects or pneumatic effects. Leave explosives to someone trained to use them.

That's a horrible idea. First off what's keeping the person with the airsoft pistol from say, shooting the actor in the face... in the eye?

Plus shooting a baggie of blood with an airsoft gun isn't going to give anything like the look of a squib.

To be very honest, there is very little or no blood at a bullet impact when a person gets shot. There can be a faint shockwave type cloud left by the impact from a large caliber rifle. SAVING PRIVATE RYAN used a white powder that was blown by a squib to get that effect.

A bullet exit will more likely have a "Hollywood" blood splatter so if you want to be authentic, only put the splatter on exit wounds.

Something else about bullet wounds...unless a major blood vessel is hit, blood doesn't squirt, spray or gush. Entry wounds to the abdomen dont really much at all. Chest wounds bleed and often have bubbles if a lung is hit.

Nearly all blood I have seen in movies is transparent...That is inaccurate. Blood is opaque!

Back to the topic...

Stay digital!

Do some research on pneumatic methods of both bullet hits to the body as well as to the ground and or other objects. Air is safer and less expensive.

Yeah pneumatic is a better way to go. We used a pneumatic set up for a shoot a few years back and it it worked pretty well. Only downside was the weather was cold and it was giving the compressor some troubles, but other than that, it worked really well.

Yeah...cool...any web address to view?

Do a google and you tube search for guacamole gun. Basically it's a PVC tube hooked to an air compressor with a valve. When the pressure is built up, you open the valve and whatever is in the tube is shot out the other end.

I agree the Guacamole gun is a good idea for the "over the top" fx. Watch the extras on the Robert Rodriguiez "Once Upon a Time In Mexico." Look for the guacamole gun effect. They blast a guy with the guac gun full of fake blood gue and later in post add a small dark digital black hole. It works pretty well, enough to sell the shot.
