Squeeze mode vs Vegas crop

I think shooting in 4:3, and then using vegas to crop into 16:9, will allow room for error - seeing as you can sort of "pan & scan" vertically - more flexibility.

My question is.. which process yields the better quality? Vegas seems to do pretty good with upscaling and zooming, but how does that compare to in-camera squeeze?

They're about the same. The difference is around 10%. Part of the difference is difficult to quantify because they're not the exact same aspect ratio -- You have to zoom in a little more on letterbox to get the same picture height as you get from squeeze mode. Which means squeeze is a little zoomed out, which means that for a comparable picture height squeeze will look a little bit lower resolution because it's a little further away.

In the end, it's pretty much splitting hairs though.

Right-click on the clip and choose "pan/crop", then from the presets choose "16:9". Then you have to click "maintain aspect ratio" to make sure that Vegas stretches the frame to the full height.
