spreader options for Libec 38

I'm looking for a new tripod and am probably going to get a Libec 38. It comes in two spreader options, mid-level and ground. Anyone have a comment about reasons to go one way or another? What are the benefits of each? I've never used a tripod with adjustable spreaders before.

I plan to use it with my DVX100b.
