Spotlight talent

What are the recommendations for isolating your subject in a spotlight while keeping the surroundings darker? I want to keep the light flattering and diffused.

So would you use a snoot with a lot of diffusion? Seems like the diffusion might ruin the isolating "spotlight" effect. But without the diffusion, you'd get really hard light, no?

And would you put that "focused beam" (e.g., with a snoot) closer to the talent? That way it would be isolated even more, keeping the surroundings in shadow?

Any thoughts appreciated.

if using softboxes use the narrowest grid fabric you can find. then use big flags to further flag off the light from the background.

if using diffusion frames you can simulate grid fabric directly in front of the diffusion with a bunch of narrow cutters and large 4' flags on the sides. this technique actually works better than the grid fabric i find. if you don't have access to these you could maybe make a grid out of black cardboard.

in any case get the light as close as you possibly can to the talent for both a softer more flattering light as well as increased background fall off.

also choosing a good angle for the light to come from can also help keep light off the background the higher the light is and the more to the side the less light there will be on the background directly behind the talent. however, this might not be the look you're going for
