Spot filter or post effect?

I'm working on a real estate job right now and I've been studying a competitors video lately, but I don't know how they're doing the blurring and focus changes. I know a lot of it just look like focus pulls, but during the interviews and also in the beginning only the key / important parts of the frame are in focus.

I thought it might be a spot filter, which I didn't buy before I flew down here, but the area of focus changes so much it makes me think its something in post.

If you know how to achieve something close let me know!

Thanks for any help!

Those specific b-roll shots you are referring to were done in post. Easily done with a mask or similar. This would be unpractical to use a spot filter for, as the blurred area changed for different shots. As long as the camera is static, and so is the element to be blurred, you can simply lay that over in post.

For the interview's and shots of the couple, I didn't see anything special, apart from some shallow DOF... If that's what your referring too, do some research on it on Wikipedia.

I think that it's mixed footage. As Andrew said, most of it is soft spot plugin, but there are takes that needed a full zoomed 2/3" camera or a 35mm adapter.

Thanks. I get the DOF of field stuff, I just love what they're doing.

What's the best way to mimic this if I'm using FCP 5? I guess I'm asking if their's a good plug-in I can buy.

I can branch out beyond the world of FCP later, but I'm stuck in Mexico right now with my laptop and just the software I brought down with me.
