SPONSORS...How to attract, etc...

Does anyone have any experience when it comes to using sponsors for an event? Do you go after them and ask various companies or individuals to help sponsor your event or project? What are they entitled to as a sponsor? If you are selling a product such as a DVD of an event your shooting, are they entitled to a % of the DVD sales generated? Are they entitled to free advertisement throughout the DVD? Now do I have to pay them anything to be a part of my project? I am thinking about showing some potential companies my current project that I am selling and finding out if they would be interested in being a sponsor on the next DVD due out next summer. I don't know how that process works though.

Any suggestions...

What is the project? An indy film, documentary?

About half my income is from sponsorships, and it is definitely not easy. It's a huge PITA, actually, but that's the only way I can do my documentaries as they are not commercial.

In general, you need to distinguish between a sponsor, donor, and partner. A sponsor is entitled to something, such as a product placement or other type of advertising. A donor doesn't want anything except for a warm fuzzy feeling inside (which I will reinforce with credits at the beginning or end, depending on the dollar value of their fuzzy-feelingness). A partner gets a percentage of revenue, which for me is $0 (hey, I'm a realist), so I don't bother.

Give some details, and maybe I can add some more info.

Also, sponsors need to know what's in it for them, such as how many people will see the projects, their demographics, etc. They only have so much money budgeted for advertising, and I bet most of that is already earmarked for conventional venues. You have to target those companies that can benefit most from associating with your project, and even then you'd be lucky to get a 10% hit rate.
