Splitting Ownership of a Movie In Current Market (Deferrals vs. Backend Percentages)

Alright so I'm about to go shoot a feature and everyone is in for the most part unpaid [on the front end] so we can get this thing made. So now what I'm looking at is fairly splitting up ownership in the movie so people are happy/don't hold a grudge about anything and at the same time, we got a project we can sell at a low rate (in the current market) and still get paid.

Basically what I'm doing is deferring out up to $30k [avg. at least $100 a day] and doing back end percentages with the key cast and key crew. I'm basically building my deferral model on the idea we could sell for at least $30k.

Do you think this is a good way to go about it? Should I go all deferred, all percentage, watch out for anything in particular? I know everyone assumes these low budget movies make no money and they think they'll likely never see anything but I'd like to package it where I try to get at least $30k for it up front. If I can't do that, I'll self distribute it online.

Thoughts?

I'm a little bummed out about it because I'm hearing that hardly anyone is getting anything on the front end from distributors for low budget indies right now and that some indie producers are modeling their feature deals out for a $15k sell price!

It really depends how many people you've got involved -- cast, crew, post -- and what you can get them for. The numbers that I've seen indicate that a no-star genre movie made for $10k is definitely looking more at $10k-$15k returns than $30k. Is the money donated (i.e., Kickstarter campaign?), or is the film being financed by yourself or someone else?
